Description

The Age-Well Routine for Oily Skin contains six products structured across morning and evening. Each product has a specific function. There is no redundancy, no extra hydration layer the skin does not need, and nothing that will make you want to say never mind.

Morning Routine

Step 1 — Gentle Cleanser

Morning cleansing removes overnight sebum accumulation, which is significant in oily skin types. The Gentle Cleanser uses Decyl Glucoside and Cocamidopropyl Betaine — plant-derived surfactants that remove excess sebum without stripping barrier lipids that would trigger compensatory production. Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Licorice Root Extract, Watermelon, and Witch Hazel Water add hydration and calming support. pH-balanced. No fragrance. No sulfates.

Apply a nickel-sized amount to damp palms, lather, massage into skin, rinse thoroughly. Pat dry.

Step 2 — Green Tea Shield Serum

The Green Tea Shield Serum is the morning routine's antioxidant protection step. Oily skin has a specific relationship with oxidative stress: squalene, the most abundant lipid in sebum, undergoes photo-oxidation on contact with UV radiation, generating squalene monohydroperoxide isomers — lipid peroxidation products that trigger inflammation, pigmentation changes, and damage to viable skin cells beneath the stratum corneum.[7][8] In oily skin that produces more sebum, there is proportionally more surface squalene exposed to this oxidative process. Antioxidant protection applied before sun exposure directly addresses this mechanism.

The serum delivers two hero ingredients: Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (green tea) and Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil (Tamanu oil). Green tea's EGCG is the most extensively researched plant antioxidant in dermatological science — documented for photoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and free radical scavenging activity. Tamanu oil provides anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties through its unique coumarin and xanthone content, relevant for oily skin prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Lightweight. Silicone-free. Fragrance-free. Apply a few drops after cleansing and gently massage in. Allow 30 seconds before the next step.

Step 3 — Calming Radiance Serum

The Calming Radiance Serum is the morning routine's active oily skin management step — and one of the most clinically targeted products in the routine.

The formula is powered by 10% Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — one of the few ingredients with documented topical effects on sebum regulation, pore appearance, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. At 10% concentration, niacinamide has been shown in clinical trials to visibly reduce pore size, decrease sebum production, and fade dark spots by suppressing melanosome transfer — the exact concerns that bring most oily skin patients to their dermatologist. Chamomilla Recutita (Chamomile) Flower Extract and Allantoin provide calming and skin-healing support. Sodium Hyaluronate delivers lightweight hydration. Lactobacillus/Bamboo Ferment Filtrate supports microbiome balance and barrier resilience.

Evening Routine

Step 1 — Gentle Cleanser

Evening cleansing removes a full day of sebum production, environmental pollutants, SPF, and morning product residue. Give the cleanser 30-60 seconds of contact time before rinsing — more thorough than morning.

For oily skin with significant end-of-day congestion, a double cleanse may be beneficial — a first pass removes surface debris, a second pass cleanses the skin itself.

Step 2 — Shine Control Toner

The Shine Control Toner is the evening's second cleansing step and sebum-balancing component. Applied after cleansing, it removes any residual traces, normalizes skin pH, and delivers active ingredients before the hydration and retinol steps.

Anchored by Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Leaf Water — the functional ingredient itself, not just a water base — with documented astringent, pore-refining, and mild sebum-regulating activity. Gluconolactone and Calcium Gluconate deliver gentle PHA exfoliation, supporting healthy cell turnover without the irritation risk of AHAs or BHAs. Two ferment filtrates — Leuconostoc/Radish Root and Lactobacillus/Bamboo Leaf — support the skin's microbiome and barrier resilience overnight. Sodium Hyaluronate provides lightweight hydration to balance the toner's astringency.

Alcohol-free. Fragrance-free. Apply with a cotton pad or pat directly onto skin. Allow 30 seconds before the next step.

Step 3 — Nighttime Eye Renewal Gel

The eye area is the one place on the face that doesn't share oily skin's characteristics. Periorbital skin has almost no sebaceous glands — it's effectively dry skin on an oily face. Retinol shouldn't be applied near it. The Shine Control Toner isn't formulated for it. Without a dedicated eye treatment, the eye area has no support in this routine at all.

The Nighttime Eye Renewal Gel delivers Sodium Hyaluronate for targeted hydration in the periorbital area. Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 has been studied for its effects on puffiness and barrier function around the eye. Grape Seed Extract provides overnight antioxidant protection in the eye area — relevant for oily skin prone to the oxidative stress that drives dark circles and accelerated periorbital aging.

Gel formulation — appropriate for oily skin even in the eye area, where heavier eye creams can contribute to milia in congestion-prone skin.

Apply with ring finger using gentle tapping motion after toner. Allow to absorb, then apply the Retinol Renewal Cream to the rest of the face — avoiding the eye area.

Step 4 — Nighttime Retinol Renewal Cream

The anchor product of the evening routine — and the reason this routine is not for sensitive or young skin.

Topical retinol converts to retinoic acid in the skin, which binds to retinoic acid receptors (RARs) in keratinocytes and triggers gene transcription changes that accelerate cell turnover, stimulate collagen synthesis, and inhibit the matrix metalloproteinases responsible for collagen degradation.[4][5] Clinical trials confirm measurable improvements in fine lines, skin texture, pore appearance, and hyperpigmentation with consistent use over 12-24 weeks.[5][6]

Retinol increases photosensitivity. SPF every morning — year-round — is not optional when retinol is part of your evening routine.

Skincare 101: Why a Routine Works Better Than a Single Product

A skincare routine is a sequence of products applied in a specific order to accomplish specific functions — each product doing its job in conditions optimized for that function, each building on what came before.

What Order Should You Apply Skincare Products — And Why It Actually Matters

Product application order is not an arbitrary ritual. It reflects the physical and chemical properties of skin and the ingredients being applied — and understanding the logic behind it transforms routine-building from guesswork into a coherent system.

Sebaceous Glands and Sebum: What Your Skin's Oil System Does and Why It Matters

Sebum has a reputation problem. In popular skincare culture it is the villain — the thing that causes oily skin, clogged pores, and acne, to be controlled, mattified, and eliminated as thoroughly as possible. This framing is both inaccurate and counterproductive. Sebum is not the enemy.

The Skin Barrier: What It Is, How It Works, and How to Protect It

When skincare brands refer to "the skin barrier," they are specifically referring to thestratum corneum— the outermost layer of the epidermis, composed of 15-20 layers of flattened, dead, nucleus-free cells called corneocytes, embedded in a specialized lipid matrix.

The Best Antioxidant Skin Care Products — and How to Use Them at Every Routine Step

Your routine doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to be intentional. Cleanse with botanicals that prepare your skin. Layer antioxidant serums that build your shield. Finish with a moisturizer that locks in protection and repairs while you rest.

Functional Skincare Ingredients 101

You've read enough ingredient lists to know that a serum isn't just "hyaluronic acid in water" — there's a whole supporting cast making that product work. Understanding the functional categories those ingredients belong to cuts through the noise and helps you evaluate products more intelligently.

Dysfunctional Skincare Ingredients 101

This is specifically about endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs)— compounds that can interfere with the body's hormonal signaling, even at low doses. The research has been building for decades. Regulatory agencies in the EU have moved significantly on many of these. The U.S. has been slower, but the science isn't waiting.
