Sorbitol is familiar from food labels — it appears in sugar-free gum, diabetic-friendly foods, and oral care products as a sweetener and humectant. In skincare it serves a similar hydration function, with a few additional roles that make it useful across different product formats. It is one of those workhorse ingredients that shows up across skincare and personal care categories because it is versatile, well-tolerated, and effective.

What It Is

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol — a type of carbohydrate with a molecular structure derived from glucose. It occurs naturally in many fruits including apples, pears, peaches, and prunes, and is produced commercially through the hydrogenation of glucose derived from corn starch. The result is a clear, slightly viscous liquid or white crystalline powder, depending on concentration, that is highly water-soluble, mildly sweet, and hygroscopic — it attracts moisture from the air.


It is a member of the polyol family, which includes glycerin, propylene glycol, and butylene glycol — all of which share the characteristic hydroxyl groups that give them humectant properties. Sorbitol sits at the larger end of this family in terms of molecular weight, which influences how it behaves in formulas and on skin. [1]


Like sodium lactate and sodium PCA, sorbitol is a component of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor — one of the water-soluble compounds that healthy skin uses to maintain stratum corneum hydration.
