A glycerin-based cleanser uses glycerin — the most-studied humectant in skincare — at a meaningful concentration (typically in the top five ingredients) to deliver active hydration during the 30–60 seconds the cleanser is on the skin. Most cleansers marketed as "hydrating" include glycerin at trace amounts low in the INCI, which qualifies for the marketing claim but does nearly nothing for the skin. The difference between a real glycerin-based cleanser and a "glycerin marketing" cleanser is entirely in where glycerin appears in the ingredient list.
If you've ever wondered why some cleansers leave your skin feeling soft and others leave it tight, the answer is usually in the humectant load — specifically, in how much glycerin is actually present and where it sits in the formulation.
I'm Lindsey, founder of Juventude. When I was building our Gentle Cleanser, I read through dozens of "hydrating cleanser" INCIs to understand the landscape. The pattern was consistent: glycerin almost always appeared, but almost always at the bottom of the ingredient list — a fraction of a percent, just enough to print "with glycerin" on the front of the bottle.
A cleanser actually built around glycerin has it as one of the first five ingredients. That's a different formulation philosophy entirely.

Glycerin is a humectant — a molecule that pulls water from the surrounding environment into the skin's upper layers. It's been studied more extensively than almost any other skincare ingredient, with decades of safety and efficacy data supporting its use in cosmetic formulations.
In a leave-on moisturizer, glycerin's job is straightforward: pull water into the skin and hold it there alongside the moisturizer's lipid layer.
In a rinse-off cleanser, glycerin's job is more nuanced. The contact time is short — 30 to 60 seconds — but that's enough time for glycerin's small molecular size to penetrate the upper stratum corneum and deposit a hydration boost. When the cleanser is rinsed away, much of the glycerin rinses with it, but a meaningful percentage stays behind in the skin, where it continues drawing water and supporting barrier function for hours.
This is why a glycerin-based cleanser actually leaves skin feeling more hydrated after cleansing than before. Most cleansers do the opposite — they strip lipids during the contact time, and any humectants present are too dilute to offset the loss.
Glycerin is inexpensive, but it presents two challenges in formulation:
1. It complicates the texture. Glycerin is viscous — adding meaningful amounts changes how the cleanser flows and how it feels in the hand. Many mass-market cleansers prioritize the consumer-test sensory profile (light, fast-rinsing, lots of foam) over the actual moisturizing benefit, which often means skimping on glycerin.
2. It can interfere with surfactant performance. High glycerin concentrations can slightly reduce surfactant lather. For brands optimizing for the foam-equals-clean perception, that's a downside. For brands prioritizing actual skin outcomes, it's an acceptable trade.
The result: most cleansers contain glycerin, but at concentrations too low to do meaningful work. The marketing claim ("with hydrating glycerin") is technically defensible. The skin benefit is negligible.
Read the INCI. Glycerin's position tells you almost everything you need to know.
Top 5 ingredients: Glycerin is doing real work. The cleanser is genuinely glycerin-rich.
Positions 6–10: Glycerin is contributing but not the primary humectant. Other humectants may also be present (panthenol, sodium PCA) — check the cumulative humectant load.
Bottom half of the INCI: Glycerin is present for the marketing claim. Not meaningfully hydrating.

Glycerin alone is a strong humectant, but it works even better in combination with complementary hydrators:
In a well-formulated glycerin-based cleanser, you'll see at least two of these alongside glycerin in the top half of the INCI. In our Gentle Cleanser, all four are present at meaningful concentrations.
The other supporting ingredients matter too. Gentle plant-derived surfactants (Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside) preserve the lipid layer so the glycerin's hydration boost isn't immediately offset by lipid stripping. A botanical polyphenol complex deposits supportive antioxidants during the cleanse. Together, that's a cleanser doing real work.

A few patterns to watch for that don't reflect what's actually in the bottle:
"With glycerin and hyaluronic acid" — these are often both present at fractions of a percent, low in the INCI. The branding implies hydration; the formula doesn't deliver it.
"Vegetable glycerin" — slightly redundant marketing claim. Most cosmetic glycerin is plant-derived already. The word "vegetable" doesn't change the chemistry.
"100% pure glycerin" — usually marketed as a single-ingredient skincare product (sold as glycerin alone in a bottle). Doesn't apply to formulated cleansers, where glycerin will always be combined with other ingredients to make the cleanser functional.
"Glycerin-rich" — defensible only if glycerin is in the top 3 ingredients. Often used regardless of actual position.
The honest version: real glycerin content shows up in the INCI position. Marketing language is no substitute.

In theory, very high glycerin concentrations could affect texture and surfactant performance. In practice, you'll never encounter a commercial cleanser with excessive glycerin — the formulation challenges I mentioned earlier mean most brands err on the side of too little, not too much.
Humectant. (Surfactants are the cleansing molecules in a formula — Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Glucoside, etc.) Glycerin doesn't lift soil; it pulls water. Both are needed in a good cleanser, but they do different jobs.
Yes. Despite the marketing, oily skin often deals with simultaneous dehydration — skin can be oily and dehydrated. Glycerin helps in either case. The myth that "oily skin doesn't need humectants" is one of skincare marketing's more persistent mistakes.
The molecule is identical regardless of source. Most cosmetic glycerin is plant-derived (typically from soy, coconut, or palm). Synthetic glycerin from petroleum is less common in cosmetic use. The skin can't tell the difference at the molecular level, but plant-derived sources are generally preferred for sustainability and clean-beauty positioning.
